Custom R2 Unit
- Autodesk Maya
- Substance Painter
After watching Star Wars again, I wanted to create a custom R2 unit that I thought I would use if I were in the universe! So I decided to do a 3D project, creating a model based off of R2D2 then textured and slightly
adjusted to fit my style. This was overall supposed to be a creative project, with a timeline restriction of 15 hours.
Because this was a cylindrical model with a spherical top, it was a bit of a challenge for myself. Creating the details and shape was a challenge due to small details and being limited to the basic tools that Autodesk
Maya offered. I went through three iterations due to multiple bugs, but debugging the software and issues of my own was a part of the learning process I wished to use during the creation of this piece.
I modelled this R2 unit in Autodesk maya, initially creating a low poly model (which can be seen in the untextured model). I then increased the detail and polycount and textured it in Substance painter. I enjoyed this process
as it was something new and a challenge as well.
